Ethiopia’s Former Security Minister during the Derg military government, Tesfaye Woldeselassie, has died according to a report by local media. After an 11-year trial, the former spy chief was found guilty of torturing thousands of dissidents and was sentenced to death in 2005. On June 1, of this year his death sentence along with 22 other former Derg officials was commuted to life in prison.
According to the reports, Tesfaye died of natural causes. He had played prominent roles in setting up torture camps during the “Red Terror” under former President Mengistu Hailemariam.
The former military regime was overthrown in 1991 when rebels advanced to the capital
