Why Did A Teacher Burn Himself to Death?

New York – A disturbing case of self-immolation, similar to the Tunisia incident last year that sparked the Arab Spring protests, has taken place in Ethiopia.

According to media reports, Yenesew Gebre, a 29-year-old teacher doused himself with benzene and set himself on fire at a public gathering in Dawro, Waka, in Southern Ethiopia on Friday, November 11th. He was protesting the country’s ongoing crackdown on dissent. Mr. Gebre succumbed to his injuries three days later at Tercha Hospital and was buried today. The news has sent shock waves throughout the Ethiopian community abroad.

  1. Unhuman and careless political moves of the ruling regime cannot be stopped without mass movements, determination to pay all it costs by all people of Ethiopia and even resolve to die when necessary. Fearful and coward people inherit to their children oppression, injustice, nepotism…. and unconfidence. Ethiopia, even the whole of Africa, remain subjects to their rulers because we all are God-will-do it people; we just don’t take any initiative and keep complaining.
