ETHIOPIA: Elias Kifle of ER sentenced to life in Perison The Federal High Court third criminal bench today sentenced five defendants from life to 14 years imprisonment and fines after being found guilty of terrorism.

The court passed life imprisonment on Elias Kifle, Editor-in-Chief of the Washington DC based Ethiopian Review website; who is tried in absentia,

17 years and 50,000 birr fine on Zerihun Gebregziaber, chairman of Ethiopian Unity Party, 14 years and 33,000 birr fine on Woubshet Taye, former Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the suspended Amharic weekly Awramba Times, 14 years and 36,000 birr fine on Reyot Alemu, columnist at the Amharic weekly Fitih and reporter for the Ethiopian Review and 19 years on Hirut Kifle, who was sentenced to three years in prison in 2009 and later pardoned.

The defendants were also stripped of their civic rights for five years.
