The historic military camp at Meshualekia in Addis Ababa is to be vacated by the Fourth Division of the Ethiopian Defence Forces and taken over by the China Railway Eryun Engineering Group, a subsidiary of China Railway Group Ltd, which is to use the buildings as its base while building the city’s new light rail system. The electrified line is to comprise two routes, one running 16.9km north-south, the other 17.35km east-west. The Chinese government is providing 60% of the estimated $US400 million cost, the rest being funded by the government of Ethiopia. Meshualekia has been a military camp since the days of Emperor Haile Selassie. In fact, the deposed emperor was imprisoned there during the last two months of his life, separated from the rest of his family, who were detained elsewhere.
