The two days meeting of the ruling party, Ethiopian Peoples Revolution Democratic Front (EPRDF), council concluded tonight picking Hailemariam Desalegn as the chairman of the front replacing the late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi who died last month in Brussels Hospital from unspecified illness.
Meanwhile, the council has granted the deputy-chairman post to Demeke Mekonnen who is the Minister of Education and chairman of the Amhara National Democratic Movement (ANDM).
The long anticipating meeting also brought an end to the much speculation of power vacant and transition that left public in darkness following the death of Prime Minister Meles.
According to the party’s recent tradition, the chairman of the ruling party is most likely to assume the PM’s post. However, constitutionally, the PM should be endorsed by the House of People’s representatives upon a party or a coalition of parties that constitutes a majority in the Council of Peoples’ Representatives submit its nominee.
The two elected chairman and deputy by d facto will be assumed for the position of Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister position.
